Diffusion capacity is a clinically useful test that provides the quantitative measurement of gas transfer in the lungs. It is commonly performed in patients with interstitial lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases amongst other indications.
Diffusion capacity is also useful in identifying certain lung diseases when spirometry and lung volumes are normal. It can be useful in the evaluation of early interstitial lung disease. It is valuable in monitoring the disease progression.
